Hi all! I've made some (coughdodgycough) Doctor Who and Torchwood icons. I'm still learning how to operate my Photoshop software (it's only crashed twice this week!) so let me know what you think. :) BE WARNED: Some icons contain SPOILERS for Doctor Who: End of Time (part one). Icons be here! |

Ship a Regular with a Guest Star Just out of interest and for a bit of fun: what guest-stars do you/could you ship with the regular characters? The Rules: You can pick as many characters as you want, and let the the ships be as cracktastic as you please. A “regular” character consists of anyone whose name appeared in the opening credits; a guest star is a character that appeared in no more than three episodes. The two characters do not have to have interacted together on the show in order to be a ship. Slash can be included, although I’m coming from the angle of couples that hypothetically COULD have existed, and let’s face it – slash was never going to feature canonically on this show. Try to provide a reason as to WHY these ships appeal to you, or why you think the pairing would have been an interesting one. Maybe we can get some plot bunnies moving, maybe we can get further insights on certain characters – at the very least, it should be fun.

The Thief's Mistress (RH novel/possible inspiration for some aspects of the BBC series?)
Can't even remember how, but a few weeks ago I came across a reference to a "historical romance" novel called The Thief's Mistress, by Gayle Feyrer, based on Robin Hood lore and centered on Maid Marian (though "Maid" is a serious misnomer in this case). What piqued my interest was reader reviews saying that the book has not only a kick-ass Marian but "a very compelling anti-hero/villain in dark and sexy Sir Guy of Guisbourne" as well as a believable Robin/Marian/Guy love triangle in which Marian has genuine passion for both men. So, I ordered the book, and I have to say I'm pretty impressed. Definitely recommended reading, and particularly a treat for Guy and Guy/Marian fans (BUT with a warning for major heartbreak!). There were parts of the book (especially Guy and certain aspects of the Guy/Marian storyline) that made me wonder if someone on the RH BBC staff was familiar with this. I know coincidences abound when you're writing about similar subject matter, but still ... some of the parallels are pretty remarkable. Before I go on to recap the book: it's out of print and a bit hard to find. Amazon.com has 10 used copies, some of them quite expensive. Fortunately, I've been able to find a file online and download it. Downloading it from the site where I found it is a bit of a pain, so basically if anyone wants it, I'll be happy to email it to them. Just send me a message with your email addy. The Legend of Robin Hood
Just curious: has anybody seen this 1975 Robin Hood miniseries (also BBC)? I stumbled on this today and it sounds interesting enough that I actually ordered the DVD. There are some interesting overlaps with "our" Robin Hood, including the fact that Sir Guy of Gisborne is a central character and Marian is betrothed to him. (As far as I can tell from the synopsis, Sir Guy is an out-and-out villain in this version, but he does seem to have genuine if completely unrequited feelings for Marian.) Moreover, Marian in this miniseries also uses a King Richard-related clause to delay the marriage to Gisborne -- she takes a vow that she will not marry until King Richard has recaptured Jerusalem. Gisborne and the Sheriff of Nottingham are also involved in a plot to kill King Richard, and Robin is also a part of Richard's personal guard -- though in this version he does not accompany Richard on the Crusades, since Richard orders him to stay in England after losing confidence in him because of the Sheriff's successful effort to discredit him. ( SPOILERS FOR 1975 SERIES BEHIND THE CUT... ) Current Mood: curious |
